Day 5 (Thursday) - Newton to Sigourney (68.6 miles) - Completed

Thursday, July 26th, Newton to Sigourney, 68 miles, 2719 Feet of Climb

If you read yesterday's blog, you'll know we had a big thunderstorm last night.   In fact the police evacuated half the Pork Belly Camp to a nearby high school shelter.   Fortunately, our tents were in the farthest end of the camp, and we just didn't hear police evacuation at all.   In fact, we slept right thru the tornado warnings snug as bugs in our tents.   It was one of the best nights' sleep of the week. We woke up in the morning in dry tents, though ground outside was a little wet.

Today, we had the longest and hilliest ride of the week.   Still it was great cycling and we managed to cover the distance and the hills in good shape.   Here are some of the highlights of the day:

At 7:15am, PBV had already pulled bags from our tents.
We start early and join the long line into Sully, Iow
Here's the water tower in Sully
And a flag honoring one of Sully's famous sons

Nobody is ready to dance yet.  It's only 10:30 am.
Instead, it's time to eat.  Bob with a pork chop.

Our camp for the night in Sigourney.   We are in the tall grass and ready for rest.

Today was one of the longer days.   It clocked out at 72 miles and some 3,000 ft
elevation gain.   We hear a great band tonight in camp.  We are looking forward to
tomorrow's shorter ride to Iowa City.   The weather is great, very cool tonight.
