Saturday July 28th, Iowa City to Davenport, 69 miles, 1,585 Feet of Climb
We got up this morning at 4:30am, packed up camp, grabbed a cup of coffee, and were on the road by 6 am. We had a tailwind for much of the day, which made for great cycling, and an on-time arrival for our bus from Davenport back to Omaha. We took just a few pictures today. Here they are:
| Our early start paid off. We are in West Liberty, IA |
| We have 20 miles down, only 50 to go. |
| Our one long stop is Beekman's where we had Vanilla & Peach for breakfast. |
| As we closer, we get a glimpse of the Mississippi River. |
| At 12:30 pm we arrive at the Mississippi for this photo. |
| This is very close to the wheel dip site where there is a long line. |
| Chris and I stop for a photo at the official finish line |
| Bob and Chris celebrate with a wheel dip in the Mississippi |
| Chris dips the front wheel, a Ragbrai tradition at the end |
| Chris muscles up his bike in celebration |
| The guy behind Chris and Bob gets ready to throw his bike in the river! |
| Bob's wheel dip includes a thumbs up for a great ride |
| The distance this week is 459 miles |
| Done in 44 hours and 19 minutes (a full week) |
| Average speed is 10.35 mph (includes stops) |
| At Pork Belly we turn in our bikes, grab a shower, and get our luggage |
| It was a great day and another great ride in the corn.... |
| Chris at the airport on Sunday morning happy to be heading home. |
| Judi waiting for us as we get home on Sunday afternoon. |
On our first day in Iowa, we told each other that the week ahead of us would be done before we knew it. Yes that's exactly how it was. A week of cycling goes by so quickly. Before you can think it, Day 7 is here and then it is over. It's a mirror of life. There's a beginning, an ending and a lot of pictures in between. There were some great moments, some rain, some heat, some humidity, and some good hills, nice people, and lots of good food. Overall, this was the best weather we've had in 5 Ragbrai's. We had no flats, only one set of sniffles (Chris), one muscle pull (Bob) and lots of ice cream (all of us). This is the kind of RAGBRAI that you long for in those cold winter months. We hope you enjoyed these pictures. Come join us at a future RAGBRAI!
